Chapter eighteen

When Amelia entered the cabin, she still feared that the dead woman would return. With Drew beside her, however, she felt a newfound confidence, one that allowed her to trust not just what he might say, but also that he had her best interests in mind.

It was the first time since her mother had fallen victim to drugs that the sentiment hit home for her. She’d gone two years without freeing herself up from previously closing herself off to every person she met.

“So, this is your crib, huh?” Drew said, taking it in and nodding.

It annoyed her when her brothers used the term crib to describe their home, but when Drew said it, she giggled. “I’m all out of pacifiers. Sorry.”

“As long as you have some extra diapers, I’m good.” Upon looking her way, Drew’s eyebrows lifted. “Oh, you thought I needed them? No, no, no. When the ghost appears, I want to make sure you have some added protection. If you don’t wear them, I’m not dropping on all fours to clean up the mess afterward.”

“I might be scared, but I’m not that scared.” She shook off his sarcasm because her gaze went to the kitchen. She gestured toward the area. “The ghost visited this place the last two times.”

“Do you think there’s any significance to this section of the house?”

“Beats me.”

“How did she act?”

“The first time? Angry. A little while ago? Happy because she knew that I saw her.”

“That’s not very consistent, unless she’s psychotic.” He winced, as though speaking had done more harm than good.

Amelia did her best to ignore the comment because what he said might have some validity.

“And you didn’t hear her speak.” Drew slung off his backpack. “So, we don’t know what she wants.”

She gestured toward the sofa, doubting that he’d brought sheets. Unfortunately, she didn’t have any extras in the house. “Your bed for the evening.”

“It pulls out?” he asked with

“Nope.”

“I won’t be able to fit in that without tossing and turning all night. I’ll just take the floor.”

She hadn’t even considered that he’d be too tall for the sofa. She felt bad that she’d be in a queen-sized bed, while he’d be lying on the hard ground, but she sure wasn’t going to invite him into her bed.

He propped his bag against the couch. “Did the ghost point at anything or anywhere? She might’ve wanted you to pay particular attention to a certain part of the cabin.”

Amelia thought back. “No.”

“That doesn’t give us much to go on.” His phone dinged, so he checked it. “Eloise just emailed me. She’s ready to talk, if we are.” He looked over at Amelia. “Are you up for it?”

“Definitely. I’ll get my laptop set up.” She went about doing that while Drew replied to the psychic.

“I just sent you the login credentials.”

Once Amelia booted up her computer, she went to the website Drew passed along to her and logged in. “Come on over.” She set two chairs in front of the laptop on the kitchen table.
